Eucalyptus trees are an inspiration of form and colour. Dominant in the Australian landscape, along with other similar-looking, related genus such as Corymbia and Angophora, they are often referred to as “gum trees.” A feast for the senses, they drip sap, ring with the sound of bees, birds and mammals, and fill the air with peppermint and honey scents. Their barks are beautiful and varied displaying striking patterns, textures and ever-changing hues, continually transforming in sun, rain, snow and fire.

These paintings are the result of paring back layers of colour and form and regrouping them, working quickly to produce impressions rather than true forms. The process is fast, absorbing, and the outcome wonderfully unpredictable.

Just like trees, the creature world contains an extraordinary range of patterns, textures and colours. These paintings are true to the form of the animal, but the colours are fanciful; it’s fun to create new colour schemes for such beautiful creatures.

Photos evoke a sense of time passing by, whereas a painting creates the illusion that time could stand still. I like creating paintings, using a wide variety of brushes, keeping an organic feel, and in the process revisiting a place, and all its good memories.

I am intrigued by candid portraits, where a person is caught in a moment of doing or reflecting; they are absorbed and unselfconscious. These moments are special and say so much about a person. I also enjoy transforming the environment to emphasise the mood of that moment.
